Latest News 2006 27-08-06 Seacroft Wheelers (3-4 cat) A BC WIN AT LAST!!!! Sluggish Saint slogs it out in the Seacroft Wheelers RR riding the pack off his wheel and into the YRC 2006 RR hall of fame. Nice one Carl! We think the Hog finished in the bunch. 27/08/06 Brigante RR (LVRC). The Hammer and Hippo rode but didn’t really compete! 13-08-06 Bridlington RR (Reg C 4th cat) The Hog is up and running and bags more BC points riding strongly into 8th spot on the undulating course 06/08/06 Team Velo Club Nottingham RR (LVRC). The Hammer and Hippo missed the race winning break (nothing new there then) and by the time the Hippo decided to chase it down it was too late. He spent the entire last lap in the lactate haze of no-mans land … never again! 05/08/06 Hetton Hawks Circuit Race (BC Reg C+ E-4 cat). Steve ‘the Hog’ Hodgson claims his first ever BC point riding into 10th spot just behind the winning break. Well done the Hog. 01/08/06 Croft Criterium Race 15. The Hippo didn’t turn up as there were no points for GC so it left the Hammer and Will to devour the post race cakes. 25/07/06 Croft Criterium Race 14 and the final race in the league (TLI). Nothing much happens in the race leaving The Hippo just inside the top 10 on GC and Will just outside the top 10. John ‘Aero hat’ Blomley is spitting feathers because he didn’t get a mention in the report for Race 9. This was Aero Hat’s first ever crit and he rode majestically throughout finishing in the bunch. [There you go John … you’ll have to find something else to moan about on our Saturday morning rides]. 23/07/06York Cycleworks RR (BC 3-4th cat). The Hippo sits at the back throughout the race but worked his way to mid pack obscurity in the last mile when the peloton hit the 1 in 4 gradient hill climb which was used as a comedy finish. Oh how the spectators laughed. 18/07/06 Croft Criterium Race 13 (TLI). Yorkies turn out a 5 man team with Mike Webmaster Dixon and Mike ‘Hit Man’ Kershaw joining the regulars. The only time the team was seen together was in the post race photograph (see below). All riders made it comfortably to the end
16/07/06 Otley CC RR Borooughbridge (LVRC). Attacks start from the flag with the Hammer trying to follow all the moves and the Hippo trying not to. The Hippo finally emerges from the pack in the last 2 mile to secure a race winning 5 yard gap for 20 seconds before blowing big time and struggling to complete the race. 05/07/06 Paul Kay Memorial (BC, 2-4 cat). Attack Attack Attack Macklam bags 3rd spot and ten 4th cat points. If he wants to ride with the 3rd and 4th cats then he should at least have the decency to bulk up to 14 stone and stop shaving his legs. 11/07/06 Croft Criterium Race 12 (TLI). After a frenetic season of racing (see Croft race 11) Tony ‘One Cleat’ McCullagh (Ferryhill Wheelers – citation fee due) takes a well earned break and heads off to Majorca for a booze-up. The Hippo starts to get his confidence back following his Otley crash but finds himself in the middle of a multiple pile up which causes the race to be abandoned. The Hammer and Will perform well during the post race cake feast. 04/07/06 Croft Criterium Race 11 (TLI). Tony ‘One Cleat’ McCullagh (Ferryhill Wheelers – citation fee due) finally returns to racing having received the results of his Harley Street MRI knee scan that revealed that the supposed injury was all in the mind and that he was a ‘big girls blouse’. One Cleat starts in the slow group and ends up tearing the legs off the intermediate group. He eventually gets dropped when the scratch group shouts abuse at him for not shaving his legs. No doubt this will be the last we see of One Cleat for the rest of the season. The Hippo and Hammer hide in the pack thoughout. Will makes it to the end of the race by riding in the 100 strong peloton for the first time. Afterward he commented that it was much easier riding without the headwind… it seems as though the penny has dropped - Well done Will. 28/06/06 Otley Town Centre Cycle Race. Just before the start Eurosport’s Mike Smith announced to the 4,000 spectators that Vince ‘Attack Attack Attack’ Macklam had won this race in 1988. However, Mr Smith failed to mention that this was to be Steve Whitehurst’s first ever road race or that Hippo Johnson was yet to complete the race despite two previous attempts. As ever, race pace was furious, wheels were touching and swearing was colourful. And soon the Hippo was gasping at the back (now an annual event), with Steve ‘I’m not gasping as much as you’ Whitehurst close on his wheel. Twenty minutes into the race, the Hippo and ‘Not Gasping As Much You’ could breath a sigh of relief when they lost touch with the peloton, but this was only the start of Hippo’s evening of hell. Just as the Hippo was coming out of the red zone the race was neutralized, which meant that the Hippo and ‘Not Gasping As Much You’ caught the main bunch again. Soon they were gasping at the back of the peloton in deja vu as ‘Attack Attack Attack’ Macklam wound up the pace at the front. Ten more ‘red zone’ minutes later and with 3 laps to go, the Hippo popped with ‘Not Gasping As Much You’ popping a little later. And the evening should have ended there, with ‘Attack Attack Attack’ Macklam just outside the top 10, ‘Not Gasping As Much You’ just off the back of the peloton, and the Hippo just off the back of the groupetto. But just as the Hippo began to realize he was about to finish an Otley Town Centre Cycle Race for the first time….. a competitor’s front wheel collapsed, spokes flew around the groupetto, a rider bounced onto the tarmac and the rest was history…. The Hippo hit the back of the fallen rider and was catapulted over his handle bars, somersaulting into an Otley resident’s front door (see separate report below). Fortunately, the Hippo landed on his head, so no serious damage was done, although he was devastated at the cost of a new helmet. When the Hippo regained consciousness he was receiving medical aid from Mike ‘Web Master’ Dixon and his hit squad – although ‘dabbing’ lager in gravel rash wounds (apparently to reduce infection) is not recognized as standard care in most medical textbooks. The rider who caused the crash was taken to hospital in a neck brace and a suspected broken back, but this was no consolation to the Hippo whose bike was in such a mess that he never managed to reach the finishing line…. next year perhaps. (Photo…Oh how he laughed!)
27/06/06 Croft Criterium Race 10 (TLI). He should have known better but the Hippo couldn’t resist racing with his friends, usual suspects “Barking Mad” Mark “Will” Wilson, the night before the Otley Town Centre Cycle Race. Nothing else happened in the race. 25/06/06 Huddersfield Wheelers RR at Birds Edge (BC). Far too fast, furious and technical for the Hippo who negotiated the course in the pack and was happy to survive to the end. 20/06/06 Croft Criterium Race 9 (TLI). The usual suspects “Barking Mad” Mark “Will” Wilson and the Hippo turned up and the Hippo even managed a lone one lap break in an attempt to snatch the £5.00 prime prize. Unfortunately, he was pipped on the line by ‘Money Hungry’ Dave Clark from Richmond CC. Nothing else happened in the race. 18/06/06 LVRC Jim Armitage RR Bolton-by Bowland. With ‘Barking Mad’ Houghton still suffering from post crash blues The Hippo was the only representative from the YRC. He hung in with the pack on the lumpy course finishing in the top 15 with his slowest up hill sprint. Comptetitors have nothing to fear in the Autumn Hill Climb season. 11/06/06 Sadberge Road Race. Having got bored with winning all the regional time trials Vince ‘Attack Attack Attack’ Macklam decided to take on the region’s not so good 3rd and 4th cat road racers. Vince’s last road race was in the late 1980’s and he had clearly forgotton the art of sitting in the pack and conserving energy. Instead he attacked from start to finish much to the disbelief of the Hippo, who sat at the back of the pack watching the drama unfold while sipping energy drink and developing a tan in the baking hot sun. The sucker punch was delivered by Richard Meadows (Cleveland Wheelers) who had sat at the back with the Hippo until the last lap when he shot off the front and won the race. ‘Attack Attack Attack’ Macklam sprinted for 6th place and the Hippo freewheeled for mid pack obscurity. (The Hippo and the winner, at the back of the pack where all the race action took place. Photograph by Tony Jary, Ferryhill Wheelers) Sometime late May - Steve 'the Hog' Hogston becomes a dad. Congratulations from the Yorkies and best wishes to mum and baby (ps when are you going to start racing again?) 09/06/06 Croft Criterium Race 7 (TLI). The Yorkies were down to the bare bones again with only “Barking Mad” and the Hippo turning up. They rode around the circuit but it would be untrue to say that they really took part in the race. 06/06/06 Police Crits at Hetton Lions (BC). The organisers were nearly treated to a repeat performance of “Barking Mad Hammer Houghton’s” somersault. This time it was the Hippo who ended up in a ditch having overcooked the last corner in the bunch sprint. Buster Keaton is an amateur in comparison to the Yorkie roadies! 30/05/06 Croft Criterium Race 6 (TLI). “Barking Mad Hammer Houghton”, Hippo Johnson and Mark “Will” Wilson were joined by “Out of Luck” Hepton in race 6. All had absolutely no impact on the race. Out of luck fell asleep at the crucial point and missed race winning break, whereas the Hippo spent all his energy bridging a small break away on the last lap which died a death in the home straight. Deceptively fast didn’t manage to knock “I’ll kick his ass” Hoy off his bike during his prize day out at Manchester velodrome and as a consequence he wasn’t on the 9 o’clock news as we had all hoped. Tony ‘One Cleat’ McCullagh (Ferryhill Wheelers – citation fee due), expects to get the results of his Harley Street MRI scan which will identify whether his knee injury is a fake. 28/05/06 LVRC National Champs (A Category), Napton near Rugby - 78 miles. Well done to Sluggish and Russell ‘his luck’s ran out’ Hepton for flying the club colours in the road race nationals. Unfortunately, a snapped chain put pay to Russ’s chances which left Sluggish having to fend for himself over the tough 78 mile course, finally finishing in a much depleted bunch. (see full race report) 23/05/06 Bob Jackson Training Race 3 (TLI). The Yorkies only manage to turn out two riders because the weather forecast mentioned a little drizzle. Well done to James Atkinson who bagged 7th and Sluggish Saint for riding in wet conditions. (see full race report) Full reports BOB JACKSON T.L.I. RACE 3... Most of the entrants to the RR series decided to give this one a miss because the forecast had been for heavy rain (unbelievable!-ed). This had the effect of reducing the field down to less than 20 brave hardy riders which formed the 3 groups. It was a bit nippy waiting under the A1 motorway bridge sheltering from the rain for the groups to get underway. The Yorkies were represented by Carl Saint and James Atkinson (so we can presume that the week 2 Yorkie flattila doesn’t set sail in the wet – ed). The circuit was the Boro/Kirby Hill/Newby Hall circuit and the rain only came down for the first lap or two and by the time the rain had stopped and the roads started drying the 3 groups had come together. This is when "Lakerveld" made a move and eagle eyed Saint had spotted this and jumped (over the space of a few minutes, in true time trial style – ed) on his wheel along with Liam Holohan and a couple of others. About 30 seconds later Saint hit a massive rock in the road (called a traffic island – ed) with a loud bang, and he pulled over (he means “climbed off” – ed) to watch the field shoot off up the road, with the 4 breakaway riders quickly gaining time on the bunch. This was when Saint decided to check the damage and realised that he hadnt punctured at all!... Ooops!. So (after he had taken his standing recovery needed because he tried to ‘jump’- ed) on went the TT head for the next lap, trying to get back in the bunch of about dozen riders (who had sat up knowing that the Saint would immediately go to the front and do all the work ‘cause he’s a tester and cannot ride any other way –ed). Once back in the bunch, Saint realized that the 4 breakaways were clean away. So Saint, MClean and Atkinson drove the bunch hard (well that’s a surprise – ed). When the bell rang for the last lap, the breakaways were just about brought back and with 1/2 a lap to go it all came back together. Just as this happened, the previous race winner, Lakerveld launched his what was to be successful bid for the win and gained 100 metres fairly quickly. The bunch chased hard but could only reduce it to about 20 metres by the finish, with Liam Holohan getting the sprint for second. Both the Yorkies manged to get inside the top 10 (infact I think James bagged 7th according to Cycling Weekly – nice one! – ed). I know there were only 20 riders! but they were all hard riders, not afraid of the cold and wet!! – (at last I agree with you - ed) 2.IAN HOLOHAN 139POINTS 23/05/06 Croft Criterium Race 5 (TLI). “Barking Mad Hammer Houghton” bags a top ten spot in his comeback race following his altercation with a tree a few weeks ago. Barking Mad and Hippo Johnson showed no signs of wilting in the arctic conditions, and both managed to get in the race winning break, sapping energy from the rest of the pack and leafing the peloton rooted to the spot. Hippo Johnson, made a tactical error in the home straight and accidently sprinted to 5th spot which means he will have to go off in the scratch group next week. There was a question as to whether ’Will’ Wilson, wood blossom following his efforts in the Etape de Dales. He hedged his bets throughout and as the strong field was pruned down he was was one of the few riders in who managed to complete the race. We're all looking forward to next weeks race when we will find out how Paul 'Deceptively fast' Gittons (Ferryhill Wheelers) got on with Chris 'I'll kick his ass' Hoy. 16/05/06 Croft Criterium Race 4 (TLI). With the Hammer still out of action the Yorkies needed to enlist the talents of Mike ’Webmaster’ Dixon to support regular Crofters, Mark ’Will’ Wilson, Hippo Johnson and Dom ‘the ringer’ Ramsden. The Webmaster quickly got into Buster Keaton mode by missing the start and having to ride in a faster handicap group – which he did with consummate ease. He then put the icing on the cake by puncturing mid peloton with 2 laps to go, nearly bringing the whole pack down. As usual the Yorkies had no impact on race outcome but Will’s learning curve is getting less steep. Photos at: http://community.webshots.com/album/550448519QENEXJ 09/05/06 Bob Jackson Training Race 2 (TLI). The Yorkies turn out a flotilla of riders with YRC representatives in all of the handicapped groups. Having taken a shortcut Mark Tilley and the long markers appeared to stay away until the finish closely pursued by Team Leader Woodrup, James Atkinson and Sluggish Saint in the middle markers and scratch groups. However, I cannot work out their final placings from Sluggish’s race report – see if you can. Full race report 09/05/06 Croft Criterium Race 3 (TLI). With the Hammer out of action the Yorkies were down to a team of two with Mark ’Will’ Wilson and the Hippo. Both had no effect on the race outcome although Wills learning curve is getting less steep. Photos at: http://community.webshots.com/album/550233768iPtfc 07/05/06. West Pennine RR in Upper Mill (BC, Regional A, 80km). The Hog continues in his attempt to cross over from MTB to road and is still on the 1 in 3 gradient of a steep learning curve. The Hog succumbed to the frantic pace of the 2nd cat riders and slid off the back and out of the race on lap 4 of 8. However, the experience and speed will stand him in good stead when he eventually competes in a 4th cat only race. 07/05/06 LVRC Ray Levers RR. Both Steve ‘Team Leader’ Woodrup and Hippo Johnson atone for their disastrous rides in last year’s race and finish in the top ten of the E/F/G and A/B/C races respectably. Team Leader and Hippo grovelled around the tough 70km course to finish with a select band of survivors, but neither had the legs to out sprint their rivals on the ‘mountainous’ uphill finish. 06/05/06 Fire Brigade Circuit Races (BC). The Hammer Somersaults out of the Hetton Lyons criterium and wraps himself around a tree. The Hammer went ‘off road’ on the first lap when he swerved to avoid a fallen rider. Unfortunately, he cart wheeled over his handlebars and went back-first into a tree. The silver birch, which was still suffering from shock, said afterwards, “I saw this lycra clad lout tumbling towards me and before I knew it he had clattered into my trunk. These lads turn up with their shaven legs and race at ridiculous speeds. There’s been a disaster waiting to happen here for years, and finally it has happened. Rest assured I will be taking the matter up with my local MP!” 02/05/06 Croft Criterium Race 2 (TLI). The Hippo and Hammer drove the peloton from the start but couldn’t keep the scratch group at bay. However, the Hippo managed to get across to the race winning break to claim 7th spot and his first points of the 15 race series. Mark ’Will’ Wilson continued on a steep learning curve managing to finish his second criterium, although not in the main bunch…yet. The Yorkies, were also joined by Dominic Ramsden who is making the transition from triathlon to cycle racing - they are in the process of persuading him to join the club. photos at: http://community.webshots.com/album/550030501fJFIqN 30/04/06 LVRC A1 Classic. Martin ‘ Mr Handsome’ Overton makes his road racing debut in the E/F/G race and rides well getting around 4 of the 5 laps before being dropped. In the C/D race Team Leader Woodrup manages to escape for a while before being swept up and bagging 8th spot in the bunch sprint. The Yorkies turn out a team of 4 in the A/B race and even formed a train on the front of the pack at one stage. All team tactics failed miserably. Sluggish Saint failed in his attempt to time trial off the front, The Hippo failed to get in early breaks, The Hammer failed to get across to the race winning move on the last lap. Racing Legend Hepton sat in for the entire race but failed to out sprint the bunch finishing 6th-ish, with the Hippo 9th-ish and Sluggish and the Hammer not far behind. (Photos at http://www.kennedyimages.co.uk/) 25/04/06 Bob Jackson Training Race 1 (TLI). Team Leader Woodrup finishes eighth’ish on the Boroughbridge-Walshford course – but that’s all we know cause we we’re up at Croft. 25/04/06 Croft Criterium Race 1 (TLI). Mark ’Will’ Wilson makes his road racing debut by missing the start and having to ride in the middle markers. The Hammer and Hippo try to escape mid race but fail miserably and finish, as per usual, in the bunch. http://community.webshots.com/album/549831394mpVBlx 23/04/06 Pete Gannon RR (BC 2-4th cat). The Hog gets himself in the race winning break on lap 3 of 10 but then gets blown out and back into the pack on lap 4. Meanwhile the Hippo hangs on and off the back of the pack throughout. Over half the field climb off but both Yorkies crawl to the end in what remains of a decimated peloton. (photos at: http://www.kennedyimages.co.uk/ - check out the Hog smiling for the camera on photo 26 and race report at: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/ 16/04/06 The Hog misses the race winning break in the Bridlington Spring Road Race (BC) but manages a superb 13th spot having rode in the chasing group of 10 riders. Despite being disappointed at missing out on his first BC points of the season, the rooky road racer should be proud of his performance. Can he build on this good form over the rest of the season? 16/04/06 The Hippo manages to grab defeat from the jaws of victory in the Stevenage RR for old codgers (LVRC). He stole a 40 yard race winning gap on the peloton with only 50 yards to the finish. However, with the sound of the chequered flag ringing in his ears he executed the fastest jelly leg sprint performance of the season and ended up 20th! 14/04/06 The Hippo comes 7th in the Prologue TT in the South of England White Jersey Series for LVRC Road Racers in Reigate. 12/04/06 Hippo happy at Hillingdon (LVRC crit). The Hippo found himself missing the race winning break because he was recovering from his own failed attack. He still managed to break free from the peloton and spent most of the race in a 8 man group chasing down the 6 lead riders. The Hippo finished somewhere in the top 15. 09/04/06 Russell Hepton bags 12 BC 2nd cat points coming 5th in the Regional A Frank Morgan Memorial RR over 90km at Kirkby Industrial Park. Russell is now lying 5th in the Yorkshire regional BC rankings 09/04/06 Wooses at Wetwang! Sluggish and The Hog climb off complaining of a sniffly nose during a snow blizzard at Wetwang RR (BC). Perhaps they should have given their places to the Hippo who completed a 22 mile SPOCO at Sedberge in similar conditions, wearing only a skin suit and without the warm protection of a 60 man peloton - then again he's from the real north! 08/04/06 The Hammer was scheduled to ride the Barton Wheelers LVRC RR but we have not heard from him so we don’t know how he got on. He certainly, wasn’t in the prizes ‘cause we’ve checked the results posted on the LVRC web site. 02/04/06 Racing Legend Hepton finishes in the bunch at the Hambleton Road Race (BC) 01/04/06 This is not an April fool! Yorkies turn out a road race team and they manage 7th (Hippo), 10th (Hammer) and 12th (The Hog) in the second Sunderland Clarion Spring Circuit Race (BC) 25/03/06 The Hammer opens the 2006 road racing season by finishing in the pack with the Hippo in the first Sunderland Clarion Spring Circuit Race (BC) 11/03/06 The Hog (Steve Hodgson) opens his road racing career with 7th place in the CNN Training race at the Hetton Lyons circuit 12/3/06 Hippo Johnson opens the 2006 road racing season with second place in the Neil White Memorial Road Race at Stokesley
