Road Racing with the Yorkies

Welcome to the road racing team of Yorkshire Road Club. We’re a band of renegades wishing to cause chaos to back end of the pelotons of Yorkshire and beyond.

We take part in British Cycling (BC), The League International (TLI) and the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists (LVRC) races on closed circuits and the open road. We try to race most weekends and once mid week.

Our philosophy is that ‘we can do it better than Buster Keaton’ so if you fancy having some fun in the pack then get in touch with The Hippo (M.Johnson@Leedsmet.ac.uk). Beginners of all ability are particularly welcome!

In-season capers by the YRC road racing team.

24 March 2007 LVRC Australian Pursuit: Course: Barton on Humber: Distance: 40 miles
The Hammer’s winter training immediately pays off when he manages to stay with the pack for the first mile – last year he was blown out in the first 500 yards. He gets to the end with the forty year olds who were quite a way behind the 70 year olds.

11 April 2007 LVRC vets series: Course: London Hillingdon Circuit: Distance: 25 miles
Hippo goes off course, into a ditch and out of the race while trying to avoid a modest pile up which occurred when 70 riders taking part in the LVRC race tried to lap the 40 women riders taking part in the BC race. Running two races simultaneously on a 1 mile circuit that’s only 5 foot wide is never a good idea…..well not if you have the bike handling skills of the Hippo.

15 April 2007 LVRC Leeds Mercury Road Race: Course: Bishopwood: Distance: 44 miles
Race A/B: Happy Hepton hits form and claims third spot by sneaking through the field and off the front to chase down a small group of escapes. The Hammer starts his season with a steady in the pack ride. Meanwhile a disgruntled Hippo hangs off the back of the pack having being told that he couldn’t ride the race with stabilizers on his bike.
Race C/D: We’re not sure where ‘Mr Pinarello’ Woodrup finished although the Hippo did try his hardest at riding slow enough to be caught by the slower race.

17 April 2007 TLI Croft Park Criteriums Race 1: Course: Croft Motor Racing Circuit: Distance: 28 miles
The Hippo hangs onto to the back of the bunch while “Mile Eater” Mark Wilson drives the autobus and the Hammer went out for a family meal! It was the usual first night fiasco at Croft with 40 minute queues to sign on, elite riders riding in the slowest group and the final sprint taking place under moonlight. Of note was the fact that the Hippo didn’t ‘touch the tarmac’ and Mile Eater powered the autobus to within a yard of the line before Paul ‘Deceptively Slow’ Gittens (Ferryhill Wheelers) emerged from the pack to execute his 1 yard track sprint to take the autobus spoils.

22 April 2007 LVRC Pete Fryer Road Race Course: Norland, Halifax: Distance: 40 miles
Race A/B/C: The peloton splits on the first corner when an irate local farmer shepherds a rabid cow wanders into the road. By the time the cow was captured and the main pack could get back on its feet, 10 riders had managed to get a 3 minute race winning lead. The Hippo managed to survive 10 climbs of Gallows Pole Hill and even found himself trying to bridge the gap to the race leaders mid race. However, he had returned to his senses by the final mile and was passed by a group of hikers on the uphill sprint for the line.
Race D/E/F: Mr Pinarello starts his first ever D category race complaining of old age and blaming dementia for mistiming the sprint for the line. He still managed to finish 6th though!

22 April 2007 BC Pete Gannon Memorial Road Race Course: Kippax. In his first road race of the season Attack Attack Attack Macklam ends up having to defend defend defend as everyone else attacks every time the they reach the hilly section of the circuit. Fifteen climbs grinds him into submission and he ends up sitting up in the final sprint.

24 April 2007 TLI Croft Park Criteriums Race 2: Course: Croft Motor Racing Circuit: Distance: 30 miles
The Hammer opens his Croft account with a strong ‘at the front’ ride and he managed to hold on to the scratch riders until sunset and darkness carpeted the course. Mile Eater Wilson drove the autobus with full beams while the Hippo took a well earned rest in a posh hotel in Scotland… all in the name of science!

24 April 2007 TLI Chevin Cycles Road Race 1: Course: Walshford A168. Apparently there was a good turn out from the not so regular Yorkie road racing team members with road racing phenomenon Rusell Hepton being pipped to second place in an apparently chaotic sprint

29 April 2007 LVRC A1 Classic - Percy Stallard Series: Course: Boroughbridge. Distance: 60 miles
Sluggish Saint makes a welcome return to vets racing and manages to get in the break that nearly closes the gap to race winning break away group. The Hepton Phenomenon nearly catches Sluggish, and the hammer nearly catches the Phenomenon. The Hippo sent so much time riding into the wind, being off the back rather than off the front rode, that he managed to catch a chest infection.

29 April 2007 BC Wetwang Road race: Course: Wetwang, where else! Attack Attack Attack Macklam gets his race entry returned … no doubt he’s too fast for the field.
